  7.     Like it or not, Cuban officials are apparently preparing for
  8. the inevitable: life after the disappearance of the yearly $5
  9. billion in Soviet aid. Twice within the past year, the heads
  10. of giant American hotel chains -- Curtis Carlson of Radisson
  11. and Jay Pritzker of Hyatt -- were invited to pay secret visits
  12. to the island. Once there, flown in surreptitiously via Mexico
  13. City, the Americans were shown scale models of prime beachfront
  14. property and asked to select one for future development.
  15. Intriguingly, these displays were set up just outside Fidel
  16. Castro's office in Havana. Castro was nowhere in sight during
  17. Carlson's visit, but Pritzker was treated to a 2 1/2-hour
  18. meeting with the leader. No deals are possible until Washington
  19. lifts its trade sanctions. But both hotel barons were assured
  20. that Cuba is willing to discuss friendlier relations with the
  21. U.S.
